During the writing instruction, students will learn to write with structure and style by using the methods of Institute of Excellence in Writing. People and events in California's history will provide rich writing content. Students learn how to take notes, summarize narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, and compose their own research reports. Each chapter of the history textbook also includes a History Notebook assignment. These assignments are meant to be completed and compiled in a notebook as an ongoing project to display.​
