Spring 2017 Course Descriptions

Performing Arts

Homeschool Connections has been given the opportunity to offer your students of all ages a very special and interactive performing arts class. This is your child’s opportunity to engage in active learning with the incorporation of acting, singing and dancing.  Your students will have a blast working together on a “Beauty and the Beast” inspired performance.  Each class will consist of a vocal and body warm up, basic theater and stage terminology, dance choreography, singing and acting.  All students will be required to participate in the final showcase at our end of the school year Open House and Talent Show. Please note that because we will only be meeting once a week, attendance is VERY IMPORTANT.

Tuition:  $190/semester and $95 for siblings 

Current student Discount fee(applies to students who are enrolled in any of the other classes below) : $175/semester and $75 for siblings

Preschool

Preschool: This age group is so full of wonder, and Connections looks forward to nurturing these little ones' natural desire to learn. Through the one morning per week, Mrs. Ebiner will foster their self-image as well as their relationship with Jesus and with each other. She will incorporate science, art, music, literature, and character education along with an introduction to number and letter concepts.

Tuition: $200 (9:00-12:00) or $175 (10:00-12:00)/semester

Grades: 4-5 year olds (must be 4 years olD by OcT 1, 2016)

Schedule: Tuesdays, 9:00am-12:00pm

requirements: * Parents are required to volunteer helping in class at least one day per semester

Kinder-1st Grades

Science 1: Students will gain a thorough Christian introduction to the study of living things with Christian Kids Explore Biology. Conversational, accessible lessons will have kids eagerly waiting to hear more about the wondrous world that surrounds them. Lessons focus on biological classification, plant life, bird structure, and types of mammals in the wild. Individual lessons include a "Teaching Time" section and a "Hands-On Time" section. Students will enjoy learning about the wondrous world God created for them. No required text.

(Maximum 10 students)

BUILDING BLOCKS 1:  Students are lead through a variety of age-appropriate activities during this two-hour block.  The curriculum used for this class includes Langague Arts and is usually combined with arts and crafts.  The students will also participate in math, character building activities, and nutrition.   "How fun...God has made such an exciting world for us to explore!"- Mary Ann Schiller

2nd-3rd Grades

Science 2: Students will  build on what they have learned during the first semester and continue to explore human anatomy. Students will learn about the body systems and conduct experiments to further their understanding.  Students will use a variety of materials including videos and online learning materials. Experiments and nature observations will enhance their learning and understanding. Students will have the opportunity to present their experimental findings to an audience.

 

Tuition: $150.00/semester

BUILDING BLOCKS 2: Students will  build on what they have learned during the first semester and continue to cover the subjects of social studies, literature, writing, along with some math practices and art. The students participate in complete unit studies with an emphasis on social studies and literature. The class will be using grade-appropriate literature to dive into the Language arts as they expand vocabulary through listening, speaking, reading and writing and awareness and self-editing in sentence structure.

4th-6th Grades

Science 3: Students will build on what they have learned during the first semester and continue to explore science through Apologia's Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology  This book is an elementary level Anatomy and Physiology book that gives glory to God as children discover all that goes on in their bodies from their heads to the nails on their toes! Beginning with a brief history of medicine and a peek into cells and DNA, your students will voyage through fourteen lessons covering many subjects. Students will keep a notebook of what they have learned, and enjoy many hands-on projects and experiments throughout the course. Students are strongly recommended to have textbook by the first day of class.

BUILDING BLOCKS 3: Students will build on what they have learned during the first semester and continue to cover the subjects of history, geography, writing, literature, poetry, Bible, math, and art.  This year, students will focus on the study of our beautiful country of America. History is HIS story and students will learn how Christianity had an impact upon the life and development of the United States. As we study the geography, discovery, landmarks, and changes of the U.S. throughout the years, students will develop their writing skills, make maps, collect information, and develop a history notebook with various writing assignments.

Junior/High School

GENERAL SCIENCE: Students will build on what they have learned during the first semester and continue to explore science through Apologia's , Exploring Creation through General Science 2.  The course covers such topics as the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machine, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. There are many experiments to do, which all use household items as they collaborate with their classmates.

 

Tuition: $170/SEMESTER

World literature with history and Writing:

Writing: Using the methods of Excellence in Writing, students will combine history and literature to produce a portfolio that shows the progression of history while showcasing their writing.

 

World History: Students will use a text supplemented by outside viewing and reading to gain the “big picture” of the people and events that shaped the modern world.

 

Literature: Students will read the works of and learn about authors in their historical context. Students will also view modern retellings of classic works in video/DVD, and compare original works to their modern day retellings, learning literary criticism and the value of original documents

 

Grading will be based on accumulated point totals which may be earned through reading, viewing, writing, testing and quizzes. 

 

Scrapbook: Students will create a History and/or Literature scrapbook (portfolio), which should include all of the class handouts, drawings, maps, reports, scoring sheets, etc.  This becomes the portfolio that constitutes the basis of their grade.

Music

Private Music Lessons include: Piano, Guitar, Violin, Cello, Bass and Voice (other instruments are available upon request).

Lessons are conventionally divided into three segments. The first segment is dedicated to warm-up exercises for building proper techniques and include scales, arpeggios, chords and rudimentary music theory. The second segment is adaptable for each student’s interest but is usually devoted to a book series for music literacy and sight reading. Other additions for this segment include music theory, chord study, composition, and ear training which the Instructor may choose to include at any given lesson. The third segment of each lesson is devoted to songs that the Student will choose with the Instructor to master for the recital performance which will be held at the end of the semester at Sierra Vista Baptist Church.

Eliana Farias

Eliana has been in the education arena for the last 20 years. She holds a BA from UCLA in Literature and she has a Master's Degree in Psychology and a Multi-Subject Teaching Credential from Dominguez-Hills. She was in the classroom for 7 years teaching all grades ranging from Kinder-5th grade but specializing in 3rd and 4th grade. 

Eliana recently started her own tutoring company called Eli's tutoring. Right now, I focus mostly on K-8th grade level curriculum, teaching reading, writing, and math.  She was born and raised in Argentina and also offers Spanish tutoring for those interested.   

Eliana is listed as a vendor for Sky Mountain Charter School and Sage Oak Charter School as well.

Stephanie Eacrett

Stephanie has been in education for 18 years and is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University where she received her math degree and teaching credential.  Stephanie taught in the classroom for 15 years, teaching high school math subjects including Pre-algebra, Intro to Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus.  She now has were own private tutoring company and would be happy to help out your family.
